Origin: Mbunda
Nduko is a rare dance that is not widespread in this region. It is essentially only present in Mbunda and Nkangala communities, and there only occasionally. Though it is sometimes an evening dance for elders, it is more commonly danced by makishi associated with or representing Mbunda chiefs. These spirits usually wear a mukotola (chitenge cloth passed through and wrapped around legs) and sometimes malambu (animal skins). The drumming for Nduko is in many ways like that of Kawali, an important item of repertoire for tundanji (boy initiates within the mukanda traditional school). Nduko and Kawali also feature a similar shoulder rolling dance move.
Instrumentation
- Lead drum: ngoma ya shina
- Supporting drums: ngoma yahakachi, ngoma yakusongo, ngoma yakasumbi
